LUCY BECK

  • a young seventeen-year old girl , small and plain-looking.
  • she graduates at the bottom of her class from Belmont Secretarial College.
  • she is an underachiever . she has only one 'o' level pass and very poor typing speed.
  • she lives with her mother and uncle in a poor neighbourhood.she wants a job badly so that she can overcome poverty and get away from her uncle.
  • although Lucy lacks skills qualifications, she manages to get a job as a secretary at Ross and Bannister's.
  • Lucy shows determination to hold on her job although she is constantly challenged by Miss Broome's spirit. her perseverance and compassion pays off when finally she manages to help the ghost of Miss Broome find peace.

THE GHOST OF MISS BROOME
  • the late andloyal secretary to Mr Bannister who had been forced to retire after 43 years of service to the company.
  • she did not have a family so she treated the office as her home and lived her life for it.
  • she dies of depression and loneliness.
  • she cannot bear to stay away from her office even after death.
  • she stays on in the company as a ghost and haunts the typewriter.
  • finally Lucy's kindness and campassion help the ghost of Miss Broome to find peace and stop haunting the typewriter.
HARRY DARKE
  • an old man who works at Ross and Bannister's as an odd-job man (a part-tie messenger , office boy , tea-maker and mender of fuses ).
  • he has been working in the firm for 30 years.
  • he admires Lucy for her courage and determination not to give in to the ghost of Miss Broome.
